WAP (Weatherization Assistance Program)

National Weatherization Day 2024

Wednesday, October 30, was National Weatherization Day, a celebration of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). This year, to mark the occasion, we interviewed two homeowners, Barbara and Cherish, who received WAP support and toured the Residential Energy Efficiency (REE) Center in Frankfort, to learn more about the training behind Kentucky's weatherization efforts.

Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) receives WAP funds from the DOE and Kentucky’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services (LIHEAP) and disperses them within the Commonwealth through nonprofits (mostly Community Action Agencies) whose crews and quality control inspectors, trained at the REE Center, install insulation, seal exteriors, repair ducts, replace heating equipment and more, saving residents as much as $500 in utility bills per year.

Interested Kentuckians should contact Gateway Community Action at (800) 927-1833 to see if they qualify and to apply for assistance.
